Hatching a baby Parrotlet
|
|
Hatching a baby parrotlet is a very rewarding experience.
The eggs are laid one every other day. Our hen, Tillie,
begins to incubate them immediately, although some hens will wait
until several are laid. During the incubation period, the
hen rarely leaves the nest, typically only once a day. The
cock feeds and cares for the hen. The eggs hatch in about
23 days. The parents jointly care for the first babies as
the eggs continue to hatch. We remove the first two babies
when the younger of the two is ten days old, and the rest as they
reach ten to twelve days. The babies are banded when they
are taken from the nest. We put them together in a heated
container and they are fed every 3 hours. As they grow up,
they start to eat seed and veggies, as well as a variety of other
foods. As they get feathers and are able to eat on their own,
we put them into a larger barred cage where they play together until
someone lovingly takes them home. As they grow, we allow them
to learn to fly and maneuver very well before we trim any wing feathers.
We believe that this gives them the confidence needed to grow
into healthy happy adult birds. We work hard with our babies
in an effort to make sure that they are well socialized and friendly,
loving little ones. |
